Lucia Mar Unified School District Trustee Vern Dahl has passed away at the age of 63.

Vern Dahl, longtime administrator of the Lucia Mar Unified School District, has died, the South County School District confirmed on Monday afternoon.

“The family of the Lucia Mar Unified School District are very sad to learn of the passing of Vern Dahl, member of the education board,” the district wrote in a statement. “Lucia Mar is better to have had Vern Dahl as a member of our board. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Dahl.

Dahl, 63, has served on the Lucia Mar board of directors since 2010 and was most recently re-elected in 2018. Dahl represented the Oceano region for the South County School District.

The district did not release details of when and how Dahl died.

“Administrator Dahl was an incredible champion for the students and staff of the Lucia Mar Unified School District,” said Lucia Mar Superintendent Dr. Paul Fawcett. “He really lived by our motto, ‘Our Kids First’ and worked tirelessly to frame his decision making through that lens. Mr. Dahl’s warm and generous presence will be missed. We were fortunate to know him and benefit from his leadership.

Prior to his election to the school board, Dahl served on the Oceano Community Services District Council, the Oceano Advisory Committee, and the South San Luis Obispo County Sanitation District Council.

According to the district, Dahl was “committed to the students and staff of Lucia Mar.”

“He stood up for our less fortunate students and our independent study program,” the district said. “Mr. Dahl was determined to ensure that the District got the most out of every dollar.… Above all, Mr. Dahl was incredibly proud of the accomplishments of our students.

Board Chairman Don Stewart added that Dahl was a “valued member of the Lucia Mar team.”

“He brought a unique perspective to the Board of Directors and was a strong advocate for anti-bullying measures in our district,” said Stewart. “We will miss him.”

Lucia Mar Unified School District spokeswoman Amy Jacobs said it was unclear at this time what steps could be taken to occupy Dahl’s seat for the remainder of her term, which is expected to expire in 2022. .

Lucia Mar’s board of directors is expected to meet as usual on Tuesday evening.
