Spencer Stuart Snags McKinsey Lawyer as new in-house legal chief

Spencer Stuart Inc., an executive search and professional services firm, announced Thursday the appointment of a successor to longtime General Counsel Dave Rasmussen.

Luz “Lucy” Lopez, Associate General Counsel and Head of Legal for the Americas at McKinsey & Co. Inc., will join Spencer Stuart as General Counsel and General Counsel.

Spencer Stuart has revealed that Rasmussen will be retiring after 24 years with the Chicago-based firm, known for its expertise in recruiting in the internal legal space.

Lopez joins Spencer Stuart after spending over 23 years with McKinsey in New York. Williams congratulated Rasmussen on his “well-deserved retirement” and said he was “essential to our success as a company”.

Lopez’s hiring was also touted by the National Hispanic Bar Association. The group praised her in a statement which noted that Lopez is a frequent speaker and member of her Poder25 initiative to increase the number of Hispanic legal chiefs in Fortune 1000 companies.

In February, Lopez’s name was on a list of 68 in-house lawyers released by HBNA as part of its Poder25 program to build a pipeline of Hispanic lawyers for a new generation of legal department heads.

Lopez immigrated to the United States as a child after being born in the Dominican Republic, according to a profile of her from Fordham University, where she was an undergraduate student. She began her legal career nearly three decades ago as a corporate partner at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City, where she managed cross-border transactions, joint ventures and project finance across Latin America.

Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., a competitor to Spencer Stuart in executive search and consulting, separated in June from its former general counsel Kamau Coar. Heidrick had named Coar his new legal and inclusion director earlier this year. In late June, Heidrick revealed in a securities filing that Coar had received a severance payment of $ 87,500 from the company.
