Winnebago County Council member says he was once a member of the Oath Keepers group

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – On Wednesday, the Anti-Defamation League reviewed more than 38,000 names on the leaked Oathkeepers membership list, and found 80 people on the list who hold or stand for public office.

23 news has learned that one of the members of the leaked list is Aaron Booker, a member of the Winnebago County Board of Directors.

“It’s something that happened about 10 to 12 years ago,” Booker said. “They were recruiting military officers and officials at the time and I was sworn to uphold the constitution, so I decided to join the group to see what it was all about.”

Oath Keepers is a far-right anti-government militia whose members claim to defend the constitution. Twenty members of Oath Keepers have been indicted on charges related to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6. Booker told 23 News he went inactive 8 or 9 years ago.

“Three to four years after I arrived, I wasn’t doing much and they were asking me to do things that I wasn’t interested in,” Booker said. “I am not an active member, I have no correspondence with the current Oathkeepers. I have never attended a meeting and do not recall paying any dues.

Booker represents District 1 on the Winnebago County Board. He is a member of the public safety committee and the zoning committee of the board of directors.
